A Healthy Child

Our Mission

Good health is one of the most important determinants of a child’s life chances. As influential professionals we recognise our responsibility to promote and encourage children’s healthy development, working in partnership with parents and other professionals to give children the absolute best start in life.

Be Active

We strongly value to importance of physical activity and recognise the need in today’s society to ensure parents and educators work together to help our children develop into healthy and active adults. Physical activity is an essential part of nursery life at here Halesworth Day Nursery and we organise copious opportunities and strategies to promote and encourage it. Our starting point is to ensure children’s high levels of wellbeing, providing a safe and supportive environment where they can independently explore their own ideas and take risks. We then provide sufficient space and a wide variety of experiences and resources for children’s activity. We use the valuable tool of reflection to ensure the opportunities available to our children encourage and enable progression in

children’s physical skills – children develop their coordination, control, manipulation and movement.

Children begin to learn the importance of physical activity in maintaining good health through these experiences. It’s not to be forgotten that the benefits of physical activity to children’s social and emotional health and well-being are many and varied. Through active and exploratory play, children develop the essential motor skills that form the foundation for a lifetime of physical activity and health. Through regular physical activity, they also become better learners.

Nutrition

A varied and nutritionally balanced diet is essential to every child’s development – a healthy diet not only provides children with the energy and nutrients they need to grow and be healthy, but it also establishes good eating habits that will continue into later life. Children attending a full day at Halesworth Day Nursery will be given the opportunity to enjoy a morning and afternoon snack, a healthy packed lunch provided by their parents/carers and a warm, nutritionally balanced cooked tea prepared and served by nursery staff. All children have access to fresh drinking water throughout their day and are offered milk in addition during snack and meal times. We strongly encourage parents to ensure packed lunches are nutritionally balanced and promote independence – we offer support and guidance with this if needed.

At Halesworth Day Nursery every opportunity is taken to demonstarte and discuss healthy food choices, encouraging children to eat well and learn about the value to good health. Meal times are sociable occasions where good table manners and independence are gently encouraged. Children’s self-esteem is developed as they help to lay the tables, serve the food, help their peers and clear away. Practitioners utilise this sociable opportunity to sit with the children, engaging in and encouraging conversation.

Our commitment and approach to your child’s learning values their participation, experimentation and decision making. Therefore, cooking and tasting experiences where children regularly experiment with new textures, colours and smells as they mix, pour and measure ingredients forms a valuable part of our early year’s curriculum.

Inclusive Menus

We celebrate and value diversity with exciting menu’s which reflect each individual child’s requirements (allergies, intolerances, religion and culture). Parents and children are invited to contribute fully to our menu planning resulting in the choices offered on our menu’s being considerate of the children’s individual preferences and dietary needs.

Weaning

A personal approach within our Baby Room ensures our staff support you and your baby as your baby develops, from milk to pureed, finely chopped, chopped or natural consistency. Our delicious meals and positive approach to meal times ensures that children’s individual eating habits are supported and developed with patience, understanding and a lot of encouragement.

Nursery Allotment

Our garden houses a small allotment area which provides our children with an exciting and engaging opportunity. Throughout the year children play a central role in tending to the plot, working together to make choices, planting seeds and helping them to grow. They start to learn about where fruit and vegetables come from and become empowered to make healthy choices and maintain a healthy lifestyle and attitude towards food.

Oral Health

Halesworth Day Nursery strives to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health. A child’s first experiences with oral health has a significant impact on the rest of their lives and therefore it is essential that as adults we support children in developing healthy habits and routines.

In nursery we promote good oral health through a variety of engaging and informative activities and experiences, one example being visits from our local dental team. We encourage families to take their children to visit their dentist from the moment their teeth being to appear, these early and positive visits help to familiarise children with the experience from the earliest opportunity.
